Proposal

Description & Intention:

As a practice of engineering functional electronics and also a design challenge based on an existing but still novel idea, I want to design an IoT device that is built around a servo and wireless module that enables the user to remotely or automatically click/push/toggle things that are not smart, such as traditional light switches and buttons.

There are two big brands that are making similar devices: SwitchBot and FingerBot. I will certainly look into their product and develop my own design.

The core design principles I have are distinctive. My design would focus more on the experience of using and playing with it. There would be LED indications and sensors integrated into the device. It would be deployable in various environments. It would be open-source and DIYable with modular and expandable parts like various types of servo arms, allowing creative uses of this tool.

Functions/Modules aim to achieve:

  • PCB with MCU(ESP32-C3) and other modules integrated

  • BLE, or possibly WIFI (antenna?)

  • Sensors: light/sound/ToF/

  • Port: ideally USB-C

  • LiPo battery power management

  • Multiple servo actuating modes (program)

  • Modular servo arm for different purposes (hardware)

  • Servo torque detection (by measuring voltage?)

  • Enclosure with mounting system

  • Glowing top panel with LED indication of status
